Tapware in these homes is generally good quality, which changes the advice — repairing properly is nearly always better than replacing.
Good fittings are worth rebuilding
Most quality tapware has cartridges and rebuild kits available, and a proper repair restores it completely. We would far rather do that than sell you a replacement, and we will tell you honestly which situation you are in.
Intermittent use seizes cartridges
Taps that sit untouched for months stiffen and stick more readily than ones in daily use. It is one of the quiet realities of a second home, and it is easily dealt with during a pre-season visit.
Salt reaches indoors too
Even inside, salt in the air works on chrome and brass finishes over time. Anything fitted outside — hose bibs, outdoor kitchen taps, shower fittings — needs to be specified for coastal use.
Poor pressure at one tap
Nearly always the small screen in the end of the spout. Unscrew it, soak it in vinegar overnight, refit it. Low pressure throughout the house usually points at the regulator or irrigation drawing at the same time.
