A drain that keeps backing up is usually telling you something, and on Johns Island the first question is what happens after the pipe leaves your house.
If you are on septic
When every drain in the house slows down at once — not just the kitchen or one bathroom — that often points to the tank being full or the drain field struggling rather than a blockage in the pipe. Clearing the line will not help if that is the case, and we would rather tell you than take your money for it.
If it is one drain only
That is a blockage, and it is usually cooking grease in the kitchen line or hair and soap in a bathroom. Straightforward to clear, and worth doing before it becomes a habit.
Older homes and newer ones
The old farmhouses out toward the rural end may have cast iron or clay that has narrowed with age or taken roots in at the joints. New builds along Maybank and in the recent developments have modern PVC, where a blockage is nearly always something that went down it — including leftover debris from construction.
Be careful with wipes
Wipes labeled flushable are the single biggest cause of avoidable blockages we see, and on a septic system they cause problems in the tank as well as the pipe. Worth keeping a bin in the bathroom instead.
