A dripping tap is easy to put off, and it is usually a small, inexpensive job once someone looks at it.
Why it started dripping
Most taps have a cartridge inside that wears out and stops sealing. Turning the handle harder only wears it faster. Replacing the cartridge normally solves it completely.
In the older homes
Where the supply pipe is galvanised, small pieces of rust break off inside and lodge in taps and aerators. If a tap has been repaired and went wrong again soon after, the pipe feeding it is often the underlying cause — and we will be straight with you about that rather than repeating the same repair.
One tap with poor pressure
Almost always the small screen in the end of the spout. Unscrew it, soak it in vinegar overnight, refit. If pressure is low throughout the house, that is something else.
Have a look under your sinks
The flexible supply lines and drain fittings fail slowly and quietly, and the first sign is usually a damaged cabinet base. A quick check twice a year is genuinely worth doing.
